AFTERLIFE
Duration: 18 mins
Director: Howard Walmsley
Producer: Giulia Mattei
By intercutting and juxtaposing antiquities with contemporary artefacts, the film examines objects in transition, their role as day to day artefacts and their evolution into cultural significance.
Made in collaboration with the Egyptology Department at The Manchester Museum and the Sue Ryder Charity Shop, AFTERLIFE is located in parallel environments where lost, found and separated objects are presented or encountered.
The soundtrack takes the form of an intermittent radio broadcast, where readings from the Egyptian Book of the Dead are interrupted by fragmented ghostly accounts of memories, emotional connections, possession and loss.
The film acts as a provocation, blurring boundaries between the locations and inviting the audience to ask questions about their own relationships with cultural and consumer objects.
